Essay 1: Argumentative Experts argue about whether or not we have control over our lives. They question if destiny is determined by fate or by choices we make in our life. Two authors both take their sides on this topic producing evidence to support their claim. David Epstein author of The Sports Gene and Malcolm Gladwell author of Outliers: Story of Success both make an argument on how much we control in our lives in which they take different sides. David Epstein wrote about a track and field athlete who had incredible jumping ability despite never practicing high jumping. Malcolm Gladwell talks about how violinists were never able to float through musical school without putting in the practice hours. They each support their side with†¦show more content†¦The author only looked at two athletes in one sport to make his argument which could mean that in other sports the same kind of genetics beats practice would not work. In Outliers by Malcolm Gladwell, the author claims that we do control our own destiny and are to make choices that lead to our fate. In the outliers Malcolm writes about an experiment done at Berlins elite Academy of Music, to see if there were any naturally gifted violinist. The schools violinist were divided into three groups based on potential judged by the schools faculty and experts. The groups were asked about how many hours they practiced since picking up the instrument. Since they all started at the same age they started off practicing the same amount but as time went on the ones who were the best in the class had practiced more hours in the week than the other kids. The elite performers had all at least practiced ten thousand hours. The author all links the kids who will become masters and top musicians with this number. People who achieve this number control their destiny by putting in the work that leads to the position they are in now in this case to become world class musicians. The author states â€Å"Their research suggest that once a musicia n has enough ability to get into a top music school, the thing that distinguishes them from another is how hard he or she works†(Gladwell 12).
